The Issue

There is hardly anyone in the United States that has not been impacted by the opioid epidemic. In 2021 alone, over 80,000 people died from an opioid-related overdose. Many of the solutions aimed at solving the epidemic have actually made it worseOne of the most alarming illustrations of this point is the inverse relationship between opioid prescriptions and opioid-related deaths.

Since 2016, there has been a sharp decline in opioid prescriptions and an equally sharp incline in deaths. This can be attributed, in part, to the rigid response from state and federal regulators which placed physicians in the crosshairs, causing a cooling effect, and creating an environment where physicians are fearful of treating certain patients.

Today, this common scenario is driving patients with pain, medication dependance, and substance use disorders, to seek treatment through friends, family members, and sometimes those they do not know. Unfortunately, these patients are often unintentionally exposed to illegally manufactured fentanyl, a substance 60 to a 100 times more potent than morphine.

What We Believe

1. Doctor's want to do the right thing. They just don't always have the time and resources during a clinic visit to uncover all of the risks associated with prescribing a controlled substance. This is causing risk to the doctor, which impacts the doctors willingness to treat certain patients and conditions.

2. Controlled substances, such as opioids, are not inherently bad. Prescribed to the right patient, with the right guardrails in place, an opioid can be a life saving therapy.

3. Physicians need tools that help eliminate the barriers to safe and effective pain management. Solutions that provide clinical decision support and medicolegal risk mitigation have the potential to save lives. We strongly believe our digital health platform, Perspectives in Care, is one of those tools.
